Group Counseling and Psychotherapy: Why groups?

Although the thought of addressing your concerns in group therapy may be a little intimidating, our experience suggests that a wide variety of problems can be effectively addressed in a group therapy setting, sometimes in conjunction with individual treatment, sometimes alone. Some of these problems include: depression, relationship concerns, eating disorders, low self-esteem and interpersonal problems in general.

What makes group therapy special are the lessons group members learn from and offer to each other, the chance to work through problems with others who share similar concerns, and a decreased sense of loneliness and isolation. Additionally, a group setting offers you the opportunity to try out new behaviors, such as assertiveness, anger expression, and limit setting in a safe environment. The group environment of safety, trust and challenge can help you build the skills you need to create the same kind of trust, safety, and solid relationships in your “real” life.

At The Brandywine Center, we offer both on-going and time-limited groups. You can read our Privacy Policy.

Groups1On-Going Women's Therapy Groups

On-going groups typically meet weekly over an extended period of time.  Group size is limited to eight participants and unless otherwise specified, the groups are composed of women with varied presenting concerns, ages and backgrounds.  On-going groups focus on past and current problems as well as issues arising in the group itself.  Participation in an on-going group provides a good deal of support, challenge and opportunity for growth.  An individual meeting with the group therapist is usually required prior to joining an on-going group.

DepressionWomen's Therapy Group

Wednesdays 5:45 - 7:00 pm
Join a multi-aged women’s group as we explore issues related to self-esteem, self-confidence, assertiveness, career challenges, relationships with others and recovery from depression, abuse, and substance abuse. This therapy group provides both support and challenge, enabling members to make important changes in their lives. Contact: Robin Sesan, Ph.D. (302) 475-1880 ext.1

Time-Limited/Structured Groups

Time-limited groups offer you the opportunity to participate in a group on a special topic. The commitment to these groups ranges from 4 - 12 weeks. Time-limited groups usually combine some structured lecture or activities in addition to open time for members to discuss issues raised for them. These groups are very powerful, either as an adjunct to individual therapy or alone.
