Individual Counseling and Psychotherapy
In individual counseling, you and a therapist meet together regularly on a one-to-one basis. This is the type of counseling that is most familiar to us. The goal of individual counseling is to help you make desired changes in your life. This is accomplished through exploration of your thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviors, in the safety of a trusting therapy relationship. The relationship between you and your therapist is very important to the success of your therapy. Thus, the initial focus of counseling will be the building of trust and clarifying the concerns you bring to therapy. Your therapist will help you by providing empathy, support, challenge, direction and the opportunity to develop new skills. While individual therapy does not provide a "quick fix", it does help many people overcome difficulties in living and make significant changes in their lives that otherwise would have been difficult to handle on their own.
Couple's Therapy
This type of therapy provides a safe, supportive, and objective environment for couples to explore concerns in their relationship. Areas of concern might include: resolving conflict, learning to make joint decisions, improving communication, addressing sexuality and intimacy issues, parenting and step-parenting, and negotiating normal life transitions such as the birth of a first child, empty nest issues, and care-taking of aging parents. Some couples chose to participate in couples therapy not because there is a specific problem, but as a way of enhancing the quality of their relationship. As with most therapy, you can expect an initial phase of assessing the problem or issue, setting goals and then working towards the learning of new skills and developing new ways to understanding your partner and yourself. For couples considering separation, or for those already separated, couples therapy can be a helpful format in which to work through many complicated issues, feelings, and decisions.
Family Therapy
In family therapy, the therapist meets with all or part of your family to address concerns related to family relationships and/or family transitions. Some of these transitions include divorce, moving, remarriage or the loss of a parent. Family therapy is often combined with individual therapy for problems such as eating disorders, family trauma, and school-related concerns. Family therapy can also be an ideal place to work on parenting issues and skills. The therapist working with the family strives to be equally attentive to each person's perspective, while keeping a focus on ways to improve family functioning and stability. As with other therapies, family therapy helps family members communicate more openly and effectively with one another and teaches families important relationship skills.
Group Therapy and Workshops
The Brandywine Center has developed a strong and active group therapy program. We believe that a wide variety of problems can be very effectively addressed in a group therapy setting, sometimes in conjunction with individual treatment, sometimes alone. Typically a group consists of 6-8 members with one specially trained group therapist. Some of the problems addressed in our groups include depression, relationship concerns, eating disorders, low self-esteem and interpersonal problems in general. What makes group therapy special are the lessons group members learn from and offer to each other, the chance to work through problems with others who share similar concerns, and a decreased sense of aloneness and isolation. Additionally, a group setting offers you the opportunity to try out new behaviors, such as assertiveness, anger expression, and limit setting in a safe environment. The group environment of safety, trust and challenge can help you build the skills you need to create the same kind of trust, safety, and solid relationships in your "real" life. We offer on-going women's groups, time-limited (4 -12 sessions) groups and one-session workshops on special topics. See our Groups & Workshops page for more detailed information.
